Dubailand, initially envisioned as a premier entertainment hub within Dubai, stands as one of the city's largest districts. Launched in 2003 by Tatweer, a subsidiary of Dubai Holding, this ambitious project aimed to blend entertainment attractions with expansive residential zones. At an estimated cost of AED 236.2 billion, Dubailand was slated to cover a vast expanse of 2,992,367,095 square feet, hosting 45 primary developments alongside 200 subsidiary projects.
However, the trajectory of Dubailand's development encountered significant hurdles during the economic downturn of 2008, leading to a suspension of construction efforts until 2013. Despite the setback, not all aspects of Dubailand adhered to the original blueprint. Several projects gained exceptional popularity, prompting their separation from Dubailand to become distinct communities, such as Dubai Sports City, Dubai Motor City, and Arabian Ranches. This trend extended to residential zones like Mudon and Silicon Oasis. By 2015, approximately AED 202 billion had been invested in Dubailand's development. Nonetheless, despite substantial funding, the realization of certain projects, including Pharaohs Theme Park and Six Water Parks, had to be abandoned. Additionally, developments like Legoland and DreamWorks Studio Theme Park were relocated to alternative areas, signaling a shift in Dubailand's original vision.
