Thousands of workers across the UAE are set to undergo training that could transform them into first responders in cases of heat stroke and related illnesses, as temperatures in the country soar above 50°C ahead of peak summer.
Mira Shuhail, head of the special programs division at the Ministry of Health and Prevention (Mohap), announced that up to 6,000 workers will receive training aimed at equipping them with the skills to assist colleagues in emergencies like heat exhaustion and heat stroke. This initiative was revealed during the launch of Mohap's 'Heat Exhaustion and Disease Prevention Campaign,' held in collaboration with various government bodies.
Beginning July 1, officials, medical professionals, and experts will visit worksites and accommodations across Sharjah to raise awareness about heat exhaustion, covering key areas such as Al Dhaid, Al Hamriya, Kalba, Khorfakkan, Dibba Al Hisn, and other regions.

"The training program is designed to empower workers to identify signs of heat stroke, administer first aid, and coordinate prompt medical assistance," explained Shuhail. "Workers are often the first responders in emergencies, and their swift actions can significantly aid in saving lives before professional medical help arrives."
Mohammed Al Zarooni, director of the Ministry's Representative Office in Sharjah, highlighted additional components of the campaign, including health screenings for workers. "We will conduct comprehensive health checkups, including blood pressure and diabetes tests, to monitor and maintain their well-being," Al Zarooni stated.
To promote healthier lifestyles, the campaign will address dietary habits, offering freebies such as food, juices, and personalized meal plans to encourage nutritious choices among workers. "Educating workers about appropriate food and beverage choices is crucial for maintaining hydration and nutrition in high-temperature environments," added Al Zarooni. "By emphasizing these aspects of self-care, workers can better safeguard their health and prevent heat-related illnesses."
The campaign will leverage social media platforms to extend its reach, aiming to impact a significant number of workers in Sharjah this year, with plans for expansion based on program effectiveness and demand.
